It just hit me that I’ve been spelling Jaime Lannister’s name wrong all this time. No worries though, the important thing is that the message got home.
Every time I watch Game of Thrones, even on a simple YouTube video, I realize something new that I had not seen before. Something that was not apparent the first time around. Check out this clip that shows the conversation between Olenna Tyrell and Jaime, before Olenna’s death.
Before we dive into analyzing the clip, keep in mind that nothing in GOT happens for the sake of it. Everything that happens, happens for a reason and drives the story forward. This conversation between Olenna and Jaime may be a big clue as to how Jaime’s story ends in Game of Thrones. Given that Sophie Turner has revealed that GOT won’t have a satisfactory end, this seems like a very possible end to Jaime’s character.
So let’s get into it:
Olenna of house Tyrell is a very wise woman She’s among my personal favorite characters in the series. She makes a couple of subtle deductions about Jaime’s future that may seem like a dying man’s speech, but when considered carefully, they make a lot of sense.
Olenna knows that Joffrey was Jaime’s son and not Robert’s. She’s not afraid to antagonise Jaime at this point because she knows that she’s going to die anyway. Olenna openly tells Jaime that Cersei is a monster. Jaime is in denial because he thinks Cersei is only a monster because she’s been forced into it by her enemies. We all know this isn’t true. Cersei is, in fact, the true monster, maybe even a greater threat than the night king. Jaime believes that Cersei isn’t a monster in real sense, and that after the battle, she will become a better person, the person who she is deep down. How wrong he is. He believes that Cersei is trying to build a better world.
Olenna comes to the conclusion that Jaime actually loves Cersei in truth and he only sees the best in her. Tywin said Jaime is a slow learner, Jaime himself confesses to Olenna that he is a slow learner. Olenna tells him that Cersei will be the end of him, and she will. He doesn’t want to discuss it with Olenna though because Olenna is going to die very soon. This could mean that Jaime may have reconsidered his allegiance to Cersei before but talked himself out of it. Because when Olenna tells him that she’ll be the end of him, he says, “possibly”. He may not be sure of it. This is how I think it would play out. Jaime left Cersei at the end of season 7. He might help fight the white walkers, that’s a story for another day. Eventually, they’ll have to face Cersei, and as we all know, Cersei is on Arya’s list so she definitely has to die by Arya’s hand. They already robbed Arya off some people, I think they’ll give her Cersei at least. Arya might actually get the chance to kill Cersei and if you know Arya, she’s going to take it. However, Jaime will be in the way. If Jaime had both of his hands, Arya wouldn’t stand a chance. But Jaime lost his main hand. So now, he’s basically a worse fighter than most other knights. Arya will kill Jaime then she’ll kill Cersei to cross her off his list and fulfilling Olenna’s foreshadow.
Olenna regrets her role in Cersei’s rise. She mentions that Jaime will regret it too, however, this might come before Jaime and Cersei’s death. Jaime might start to regret helping Cersei the minute he deserts her. Jaime is a changed man even at this point. When Olenna asks if the poison will cause pain, he says that he made sure there wouldn’t be any, these are clear signs that he’s slowly moving away from Cersei although he’s still in denial. At this point, I’m starting to believe that Jaime will dye by Arya’s hand. He won’t have the happy ending with Brienne, sorry guys, there’s no way this ends well for Jaime.
