It’s not uncommon to be out drinking with your buddies then all of a sudden someone just vomits or starts complaining that they feel like vomiting. It sort of ruins the moment, especially if that person is you.
I’m not a doctor or anything, but, let me share with you some tips I use to avoid vomiting or having a terrible hangover after a night of mild to heavy drinking.
Always remember to drink responsibly.
- Take a heavy meal in advance of drinking.
A heavy meal will give your body the energy it needs to deal with all the alcohol you’ll be introducing to your system. Other than that, a heavy meal will slow down the rate at which the alcohol enters your bloodstream, therefore, reducing the rate at which you get drunk hence giving your body a head start to get rid of the alcohol as it comes.
- Don’t take a heavy meal right before drinking heavily.
Every time I eat a heavy meal and go straight to heavy drinking, I almost always feel sick. After evaluating the cause for some time, I found that it’s almost always because I ate right before drinking. You don’t want to do that. It will cause you to feel nauseated soon afterwards.
- Take it slow.
I know shots are all the rage, but those shots are the ones that lead to vomiting if taken in close succession. The problem with shots is that they don’t hit you immediately. It takes some time for the effects to kick in. It could even deceive you into thinking that you can handle more alcohol than you actually can. This leads you to drink more in quick succession and have a worse hangover.
- Drink lots of water.
Alcohol is an anti-diuretic, meaning it makes you feel like peeing a lot. This makes you lose a lot of water in your body as you drink. It’s always a good idea to either drink water alongside your drinks or to drink a lot of water as soon as you can. If you’re going to bed, make sure to drink water before sleeping. Dehydration sometimes causes you to have a worse hangover than you normally would. I found that sometimes I evaded whole hangovers just by drinking lots of water before going to bed.
- Eat sugary treats when you wake up.
I’m not really sure if this is a real method, but it works for me. After a night of drinking, when I wake up, I like to have either an energy drink or a soda nearby to drink. I always feel like the sugar content inside gives me the energy to jumpstart the body. I think caffeine might have the same effect, but I’m not entirely sure, I’ve not tried it out yet. I mostly crave junk when I have a hangover.
- Know your limits.
Some people handle alcohol better than others, lucky bastards. It’s a good idea to know how much you can drink before feeling nauseated or before getting to the point that you’ll have a terrible hangover. When you get to this point, slow down or stop completely. This will save you all the pain the next day.
As far as I’m concerned, I’m not aware of any methods available to completely avoid a hangover after drinking heavily or to speed up recovery from a hangover. If I get them I’ll let you know. It’s best to take preventive measures.
Remember: excessive consumption of alcohol is harmful to your health, don’t operate machinery under the influence of alcohol.
