Popular Benga musician, Jimmy Wayuni Githinji passed away in a road accident along the Thika Super-highway. The renowned musician died at night on Tuesday the26th of May. It’s alleged that the celebrated artist was escorting another musician by the name Jacksam Kibandi . The latter, however, sustained serious injuries and is still in the hospital. Ruiru Sub-County Police commander Phineas Lingera confirmed Wayuni’s demise.
It’s barely a year since another popular Kikuyu musician by the name John De Matthew lost his life when he rammed into a lorry at Bluepost. This is a call for all musicians and Kenyans at large to be extra careful on the roads. The artist is behind tracks such as ‘Mama Sululu’, ‘Uturaga Uhenagia’ and the popular ‘Airitu a Ruiru’.
In the latter, the popular artiste termed women from Ruiru to be terrible lovers. “..they have a habit of eating meat before it is even placed on the roasting grills…” Were the lyrics to that song.
Wayuni had his first recording ”Kairitu Royco” in 1978, like so many other artists, he too has also been a victim to piracy. When asked how old his music was, Wayuni often described his music as ‘old as he is.’ Wayuni had released several albums by the time of his death.
The artiste was also an employee of Kenya Revenue Authority where he worked as an assistant commissioner in charge of policy formulation. His KRA job, as well as his music career, gave him a chance to travel to so many countries in the continent.
Netizens and fans have taken to social media to condole the legend. Popular musician Samidoh took to social media to mourn the artist terming him as a father to many in the music industry.
“…Wayuni was a close friend and influenced my development so much both personally and musically…he was, of course, a father to many of us in the Kikuyu music industry. We will all miss him as a good role model and his good-humoured way of delivering his message.”
